Cover letter的作用跟古时候拜访人家用的拜帖有点相似。如果把期刊编辑形容成住在高墙大院里的名门望族，那投稿人就是希望给伯乐相中的无名小辈，这么说来拜帖一定要精致醒目有特色。不过如果作者已经是业内大牛了，估计投稿信是可以随意一些的。
在写cover letter的时候，应该要注意的以下几点：
1. 严格遵守投稿须知的要求，不要犯一些不符合投稿要求的低级错误，这样会显得不够有诚意。
2. 精简明了很重要。越简短的cover letter，越有可能被仔细阅读，琐碎细节能省则省。主要说明为何这篇文章适合该期刊，避免长篇大论，力求简洁有力。
3. 小细节可以更具体一点，比如：
如果已经明确知道编辑名字，可以将投稿信署名给他。
所有共同作者都要清楚地列出来。
透过参照此期刊最近出版的相关研究展示你对该期刊的了解，并说明你的文章的相关性。
4. 最重要的是要说明你的研究的价值。可以强调下面几点：
论文中提出了新观点或新发现。
论文是目前最新的研究趋势，或热点议题。
论文将以往期刊已发表的成果又向前推进了一步。
但是也要注意的是，不要写的太多。重点挑出一两个就可以了，太多反而让人觉得不可信。
5. 主动提出潜在的科研伦理问题。如果文章观点跟其他人兴趣有一些冲突什么的，主动提出并简单解释，会容易给编辑一种负责且全面的印象。
